Professional Development

AI, CS & STEM professional development for K-12 districts.

AI PD that's hands-on, custom-built, and ahead of the mandate.

Freyja Labs has been delivering AI literacy, computer science integration, computational thinking, and STEM professional development to K-12 districts for over a decade — including AI PD work that pre-dates ChatGPT. Every engagement is designed from scratch around your teachers, your standards, and your community. Nothing is off-the-shelf.

What we don't do

We don't sell generic PD.

Most "AI PD" on the market right now is a vendor's product demo with a CEU certificate stapled to the back. A 60-minute webinar, a slide deck pulled off the shelf, and a binder no one opens again. That is not what we do.

We do not deliver pre-built curriculum. We do not license a packaged "AI literacy program." We do not have a roadshow agenda we drop into your district unchanged. The pre-engagement survey, the activities, the artifacts, the facilitation notes — all of it gets designed from your context up. The work the teachers do in the room is the point; the materials are receipts.

We do not provide generic materials. We provide the empowerment and support for teachers to build lessons themselves — tailored to their students and grounded in their community's experience.

What we deliver

Six PD areas, one design philosophy.

These are the topic areas we've shipped against, repeatedly, with documented outcomes. Each maps to current and emerging state mandates — and each is delivered by the same hands-on, research-grounded approach.

AI PD

AI Literacy & Generative AI Professional Development

Hands-on AI PD for teachers and instructional leaders — from how large language models actually work to evaluating AI-generated content with the "Check the Machine" protocol. Built before ChatGPT, refined through every classroom cycle since.

  • Functional mental models of generative AI for non-technical educators
  • Subject-agnostic protocols for evaluating AI output
  • Assignment redesign for classrooms where students already use AI
  • Policy-aligned content for state AI literacy standards as they emerge
CS Integration

Computer Science Integration

Embedding computing concepts into the subjects teachers already teach — math, science, ELA, social studies. Supports state CS mandates without forcing every teacher to become a CS specialist.

  • Standards alignment to state CS frameworks
  • Cross-curricular activity design with content-area teachers
  • Micro:bit, Python, and unplugged approaches by grade band
  • Implementation coaching through the academic year
Computational Thinking

Computational Thinking & Modeling

Decomposition, abstraction, pattern recognition, and algorithmic thinking — taught through models teachers build, run, and revise. Computational modeling that maps directly to NGSS and updated state science standards.

  • NetLogo and agent-based modeling for science classrooms
  • Data literacy and computational reasoning across grade bands
  • Modeling-based assessment design
  • Connection to AI literacy: models as the underlying mental object
Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity Education

Five years of GenCyber camp delivery and two NSF cybersecurity-education awards behind a teacher-facing approach to cybersecurity that fits inside K-12 classrooms — adversarial thinking, threat modeling, and secure-by-design literacy.

  • Hands-on labs adapted for K-12 contexts and budgets
  • Adversarial thinking as a transferable cognitive frame
  • Career-pathway connections for high school programs
  • Foundations that transfer directly into AI literacy work
STEM Integration

Cross-Disciplinary STEM Integration

Authentic STEM integration that respects the disciplines instead of dissolving them. Engineering design, scientific inquiry, mathematical reasoning, and computing as connected practices — not a "STEM day" once a quarter.

  • Engineering design challenges anchored to content standards
  • Phenomenon-based units that span science and math
  • Cross-disciplinary teacher teams (groups of three or more)
  • Sustained from elementary through secondary grade bands
Data & Modeling

Data Science & Computational Modeling

Working with real data in classroom settings — from NetLogo simulations to Jupyter notebooks to spreadsheet-scale data investigations. Builds the data literacy that AI literacy depends on.

  • Classroom-ready datasets and investigation routines
  • Spreadsheets, Python notebooks, and NetLogo by grade-band fit
  • Data ethics and bias evaluation woven into every lesson
  • Direct bridge into AI literacy and CS standards
15 years of practice

The portfolio behind the PD.

The technology has changed completely since 2012. The pedagogy has not. Each program built on the one before it — and the AI PD work we deliver today is possible because of everything that came before.

2012–2015

Robotics & engineering integration

Lego, Arduino, and Baxter robots as a tangible entry into CS and engineering for K-12 teachers. Peer-reviewed outcomes, and the first lessons in designing around concepts instead of products.

2016–2018

Computational modeling & RAMPED

MSP-funded year-long PD with 22 teachers across math, science, social studies, and ELA. NetLogo, VR, Arduinos, Raspberry Pis, and Jupyter notebooks — published evaluation in Education Sciences.

2018–2022

Cybersecurity, CS integration & scale

WySLICE, WySTACK, and GenCyber reached 200+ teachers. Summer institutes paired with academic-year implementation support, teacher-authored lessons published to CxEdHub.

2023–present

AI literacy & the CRAFT framework

Generative AI, prompt engineering, and the "Check the Machine" evaluation protocol — built on the CRAFT pedagogical framework developed through our research.

Already have a code?

View your district's prospectus.

If we've built a prospectus for your district, you'll have received a short code in the format 00000-abbr — five digits, a dash, and a short district abbreviation. Enter it below and we'll take you straight to it.

Don't have a code yet? Try 00000-demo to see a placeholder sample of how a prospectus is shaped — or any unrecognized code will land you in the same place. Every real prospectus is custom-built; the sample is intentionally generic.

Don't have a code? Reach out and we'll build a sample for your district.

Be clear-eyed

What Freyja Labs PD isn't.

  • Not a vendor product. We don't sell access to a platform, an LMS, or a curriculum library.
  • Not a one-shot webinar. Single-dose PD doesn't change practice; we don't pretend otherwise.
  • Not pre-built. Every workshop, institute, and module is co-designed with your team.
  • Not delivered by junior staff. The founders design and deliver — or directly co-lead — every engagement.
  • Not a CEU mill. The point is changed practice in classrooms, not seat-time on a transcript.
Frequently asked

Questions districts ask.

What is AI PD?

AI PD — short for AI professional development — is structured training that prepares K-12 teachers and instructional leaders to understand generative AI, evaluate its outputs, and redesign instruction for classrooms where students already use it. Effective AI PD is hands-on, subject-agnostic, and grounded in current research, not a one-hour vendor webinar.

Do you deliver AI professional development for districts?

Yes. Freyja Labs has been delivering AI literacy and generative AI professional development to school districts since before ChatGPT launched. Every engagement is custom-designed for the district, ranging from single workshops to multi-year strategic partnerships, and is delivered by active researchers in computing and AI.

Do you sell off-the-shelf AI curriculum or PD packages?

No. We do not sell pre-built curriculum or generic PD modules. Every workshop, institute, and consulting engagement is co-designed with your district around your teachers, your students, your standards, and your community context.

Who delivers the PD?

The founders — Mike Borowczak, Ph.D. and Andrea C. Burrows Borowczak, Ed.D. — are active researchers with $8M+ in funded research between them, multiple NSF awards, and 15 years of K-12 PD delivery experience. PD is delivered or co-led by the founders rather than handed off to junior staff.

How do I view a prospectus or sample PD plan for my district?

If we have built a sample offering or prospectus for your district, you will have received a short code in the format "00000-abbr". Enter the code on this page to view your prospectus. If you do not have one yet, you can browse a placeholder sample to see how a prospectus is shaped — but every real prospectus is custom-built. Reach out through the contact page to start one.

Tell us where your district is and where you want to go. We'll come back with a real plan, not a pitch deck.
